After the suspiciously-fast progress of ‘Sun Bird’, I started thinking about more book art sculptures with carved-wood bird spines.
Lo, I found the Second Bird!
Hailing from Bisbee AZ but made who-knows-where, of two-toned mesquite or another desert wood, and very woodpecker-like…this 11″ long sculpture has a flat back that will be ideal to support covers and fabric pages.
Here’s the seller’s image.
Here’s mine.
I have no idea what theme this will become. Maybe ‘Storm Bird’ to carry on the monsoon/autumn rain theme?
I like the angle of this piece as it rests, so will probably keep it on its stand…just lengthen the base for more support. One crack on the existing stand can be filled with resin and turquoise chips.
I plan to remove the beady eyes & replace them with carved abalone shell pieces. Depending on the refinishing process, I’ll either inlay the body or do wood burning designs.
Getting it refinished as-is might be tricky, though. All depends on whether I can safely separate bird, legs, & stand. (Update: the legs come off! Bless you, unknown carver!)
Which means I’m still on the hunt for the Third Bird. I might just have to carve it.
I have no idea about theme.
‘Snow Bird’ is out because negative social connotations (snowbirds are generally Boomers with winter homes in nice winter climates, often becoming the bane of year round citizens).
No rule against keeping this maybe-series at two pieces!
Update: FIVE HOURS LATER. The universe has a sense of humor. The same Goodwill where I found Bird #1. Another bag of kitschy dodads on the Crafts wall.
Among the flotsam were *seven more wooden birds*.
One flamingo in pieces, all there but the base.
Four little (walnut?) birds about 5″ long.
Two larger birds stained in bright colors, probably needing recarving. There are five wooden leaves & two heavy wood bases.
So now I really have to think about this book series.
Update #2: I have found *more wood birds*, and these could be from the same carver as Bird #2.
So this will be quite a series.
