Yeah, that’s gonna work

Dyslexic* and semi-literate ‘publisher’ starting major new genre press; thinks ‘loving the genre’ and being ‘financially solvent’ will be enough.

* I have friends and family who deal with various forms of dyslexia. They have my utmost respect. Since I was four, I’ve never lived in a world where words betrayed my brain.

I understand loving genre fiction and wanting to support it. But a publisher who wants to edit needs to have a formidable command of language. I won’t link to the publisher in question, but some of their social media posts seem to indicate far deeper language issues than dyslexia.

It would be like someone tone-deaf wanting to conduct a symphony. Not saying it can’t be done, just that the outcome is unlikely to be good.

  1. Alas, yes. The sad thing is, there are so many other positive ways a person can support and promote genre fiction. Buy and read more of it. Do thoughtful and reasoned reviews of genre fiction and media. Attend and volunteer at genre conventions and local genre events. Engage the public and other fans through online special interest groups. Write a blog. Learn an applicable art or craft.

None involve risking another writer’s first rights and intellectual property.
